Bring solar to the Sciencenter in Ithaca, NY, and help them expand their educational programs in the community and open a new exhibition gallery that will empower guests to engage in sustainable practices in their daily lives.
The 15 kW photovoltaic (PV) solar energy system will save the Sciencenter over $1,700 annually and offset 15,000 pounds of CO2 per year.
By giving solar energy to the Sciencenter, we help them pay for the electricity needed to provide leading edge science education: teaching children (of all ages) about the wonders of science and importance of protecting the environment, while also addressing climate change!
The Sciencenter, which welcomes over 100,000 visitors from across the country each year, is in the process of creating a new exhibition gallery that will empower guests to engage in sustainable practices in their daily lives. One of the exhibits in this gallery will present the benefits of solar energy as a way to live sustainably. This open-ended and hands-on exhibit will illustrate how technology is able to harness energy from the sun and showcase a historical and real-time display from a viewable PV array on the Sciencenter's roof. Graphics accompanying the exhibit will inform visitors to the Sciencenter that this PV array is supplying all of the energy required to power the entire Sustainability Gallery.
Additionally, energy savings from the PV array will offset the Sciencenter's operating costs, which helps the Sciencenter continue to offer and grow its free access programs including free memberships for low-income families.
